Sometimes I think the deepest fear we have
Is that one day we will slip
Silently away
And no one will notice
That we are gone.
And that the footprint we have left behind will be so shallow
That it will simply be swept away in the wind,
Or washed away
Perhaps by a single brief summer sun shower.
Will anyone remember the words we said, the things we did, the laughter we made, the tears we shed…
Most don’t want to be forgotten.
As if we were never here.
As if it didn’t matter.
But to not be we need to make it count.
We don’t have to discover a species, or a cure, or a planet,
We just need to make it count.
We don’t have to compose the greatest song, or book, or work of art,
We just need to make it count.
Our name doesn’t have to be on a building or a monument, or lead a revolution.
But we need to make it count.
